How To Remove Candle Wax From Carpeting

Removing candle wax from carpeting is not as hard as it may seem.

Start by removing as much of the solid wax as possible by using a kitchen spoon to loosen the wax. Next put an ice cube on the wax to freeze it. The wax should harden enough to break it up and get more of it out. Be careful not to damage the fibers during this step. It is O.K. that some wax will remain and will be addressed in the next step.

Next, to get the rest of the candle wax out of the carpet, put a clean white towel moistened with water over the wax spot. Place a clothes iron, set on low, on top of the towel where the wax is for a few seconds at a time. Be Careful as the carpet fibers can also melt with too much heat. The wax will melt and transfer to the towel. Apply a new towel as often as necessary until you get out all of the wax.

If this doesn’t get all of the wax out of the carpet, or if some colored stains remain, you can next try using rubbing alcohol. Using a clean white towel, apply the alcohol to a towel and dab the area. Repeat this with a fresh towel until you get no more transfer of wax or dyes to the towel.

When you are done, rinse the area with clean water, blot up the excess, and set up a fan to dry the area quickly.

How to Remove Red Wine from Carpet!

Removing red wine from carpet can be very difficult to say the least. The key to achieving the greatest success is to take action as quickly as possible.  There are several household items that are readily available that can be used to attempt to remove the stain. Dish detergent diluted with water (approximately 2-4 drops to a cup of water) mixed with 1 tablespoon of white vinegar, Hydrogen Peroxide (diluted), White Wine, Club Soda and salt is all common household items that can be used to remove wine from carpet. Which ever solution you choose the following procedures should be followed. It is important to always test the carpet in an   inconspicuous area prior to attempting to remove a stain. First blot the stain with a white terry cloth towel starting at the perimeter of the stain and then working your way to the center to remove as much of the wine as possible. Be careful not to be to aggressive with the towel to avoid pushing the Tannins into the dye sites of the carpet fibers. Next dilute the stain carefully with your cleaning solution using a damp white terry cloth towel starting at the perimeter of the stain and work your way to the center making sure to blot the stain without aggressive agitation. Repeat as necessary until the stain is completely removed. Be careful not to apply to much soap or cleaning solution to the carpet as this can leave a sticky residue which can attract soils later on. Next lightly dab or rinse the area with cold clean water using a white terry cloth towel to help remove as much residue as possible from the area. If there is still some discoloration left the area can be covered with a layer of salt approximately 1/4 inch thick and then covered with a white terry cloth towel for several hours or until the area is completely dry. Finally the area should be vacuumed thoroughly to remove the remaining salt. It is always a good idea to consult or contact a Professional Carpet Cleaning Service   anytime you have a difficult spot or stain. Professional Carpet Cleaners have additional cleaning products and procedures and Tannin Stain Removers that will improve your chances for success.  A good Cleaning Service will be happy to assist you over the phone in removing the stain or they may have a crew in your area that can help with removing the stain. Quick Response Time Is Critical When You Have Water Damage

Water Damage can occur from a variety of sources; Basement Flooding, Plumbing leaks, Burst Pipes, and Frozen Pipes just to name a few.

Immediate response to a Water Damage is the most critical thing in minimizing the amount of damage that the unwanted water can cause. Typically Green Clean can respond to a Water Damage Emergency in less than an hour. We have staff on call twenty four hours a day, 365 days a year for water damage restoration and repair.

The reason why response time is so critical is because the water will migrate rapidly to other areas and will quickly be absorbed by porous materials such as carpeting, carpet padding, drywall and insulation in walls and between floors.  The sooner the water is removed, the less area is affected.

The second reason why response time is so critical is because after water intrusion, mold and bacterial spores germinate and multiply.  One organism can multiply to more than one billion organisms in less than 24 hours. You typically have 72 hours to dry porous materials, after that time we recommend removal and replacement due to health concerns.

From initial consultations to project management, reconstruction and restorations, every member of the Green Clean staff is passionate about restoring healthy environments. That passion, along with an experienced, IICRC-certified staff of cleaning and restoration technicians have earned Green Clean an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

Tips for Preparing Your Home this Fall to Prevent Water Damage.

Fall is a critical time to do a few preventive things to prevent water damage in your home.

  1. First and foremost, turn off your exterior faucets valves from the inside, open the faucet to drain the water and remove garden hoses. If these valves are left open the water inside the pipe near the exterior can freeze and expand causing the pipe to burst, when it warms above freezing the ice will melt and you will have water running into the interior of your home until it is turned off. Even if you have ‘frost-proof’ faucets it is still important to turn them off from inside of your home. They can freeze and burst, usually in the valve itself, so you will not know this has happened until you turn the faucet on in the spring. If you do not have an interior shut off valve we recommend that you place an insulated cover over the faucet which can be purchased at your local hardware store.
  2. Clean Leaves and Debris from your Gutters.  Once the leaves have fallen, clean your gutters and downspouts. Plugged gutters and downspouts can cause water to seep in next to the foundation and cause basement flooding. Many insurance companies do not cover water damage from seepage. Make sure your downspouts run at least six feet from the foundation, and your landscaping is slopped away from your foundation for at least six feet.
  3. Clean you sump pump pit. Once the ground has frozen, remove your sump pump and clean the pit it sits in. Sand and silt will accumulate in the bottom of the pit and can reduce the life of the pump. Replace the pump and check for proper operation of the float. When water is flowing in the pit in the spring is not a good time to find it is malfunctioning.

We hope these helpful tips will prevent you from finding a flood in your home.  If you do have a Water Damage emergency call our 24 hour Water and Fire Damage hotline at 952-930-6853 for an immediate response.

The benefits of annual Carpet Cleaning

Most Carpet Manufacturers recommend professional carpet cleaning by an IICRC Certified Carpet Cleaner every 12-18 months to maintain the warrantee. Regular Carpet Cleaning should be performed just like routine maintenance on you car or furnace. What happens when you don’t change your oil or your furnace filter on a regular basis? It wears out and requires additional maintenance and often times requires replacement before it is necessary. Carpets are the same way! Quality yarn systems require regular maintenance just like anything else. Think of your carpets just like a giant air filter almost like a secondary furnace filter which harbors all sorts of dust, soils and allergens. Regular Carpet Cleaning with eco-friendly cleaning products can greatly improve indoor air quality which in turn improves the health of the occupants. In addition it also removes soils that cause damage to carpet fibers and greatly increases the life of the carpet. Categories of Water in Water Damage

Water damage is divided into three general classes: Class 1-Clean Water; Class 2-Gray Water; and Class 3-Black Water. The class of the water contamination is not determined by the color of the water, it is determined by the source, contents, history and characteristics of the water.

Class 1 – Clean Water

Clean water comes from a source that does not pose substantial harm to humans.  Examples include, but not limited to, broken supply pipes and appliance malfunctions.  Clean water in flooded structures that remain untreated may change to class 2 water in as little as 48 hours and class 3 water in as little as 96 hours.

Class 2 – Gray Water

Gray water contains a significant level of contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort and sickness if consumed by or exposed to humans. Examples include, but not limited to, discharge from dishwashers or washing machines, overflows from washing machines, overflows from toilet bowls with some urine (no feces), and sump pump failures.  Gray water in flooded structures that remain untreated may change to Class 3 water in as little as 48 hours.

Class 3 – Black Water

Black water contains pathogenic agents and is grossly unsanitary.  Black water includes sewage and other contaminated water. Toilet back-flows that originate from beyond the toilet trap is considered black water, regardless of visible content or color.  Black water includes all forms of flooding from ground surface  water and rising water from streams and rivers.  Such water sources carry silt and organic matter into structures and create black water conditions.

Microorganismsare always present in the indoor environment.  To prevent amplification of microorganisms, immediate response is necessary for all classes of water intrusion.

Spring Carpet Cleaning and Removing Pet Odors

Spring in Minnesota is always a common time for Carpet Cleaning and Upholstery Cleaning. In spring and summer we always receive a lot of calls regarding pet odors and accidents on Carpet. When urine comes into contact with carpet it provides the perfect breeding ground for odor causing bacteria.    As temperatures and humidity increase it causes odors and bacteria to become more prevalent. There are many products available over the counter that claim to remove pet stains and odors. Outright and Natures Miracle are two of the common products we see used in peoples homes. These products are typically not very effective in removing the odors for the long term especially when multiple accidents have occurred. Items such as your eyes, nose and UV light can also be used to help aid in determining the location of contaminated areas.  In reality it is very difficult if not impossible to completely remove odors and bacteria from carpet and padding because these materials are porous and there is no way to guarantee that all of the urine contamination will be removed. In fact there are no miraculous cleaning agents or potions to completely eliminate pet stains or odors under all circumstances. Instead it is best to use a combination of procedures to achieve effective results and this is best prescribed by an IICRC Certified Odor Control Technician. Some of the products that can be used are Acid solutions used to break down alkaline salts, rinsing agents used to rinse and neutralize the acid residue, Bio/Enzyme digesters, quaternary agents and odorcides or biocides. Carpet Cleaning procedures may include use of a large syringe or a Water Claw. Removal and replacement of carpet pad. Treatment and sealing or removal of flooring and sometimes wall materials and in some cases complete carpet replacement is recommended. Green Clean Carpet Care is always happy to provide free phone consultations and in home assessments to help determine the best course of action.
